About EARTH

Hello everyone!

My name is Tara and I am co-curator of EARTH: Fragile Planet (as Kate previously stated). I want to explain a little about the upcoming exhibition.

Kate and I chose Greg Manchess and Jack Unruh to help curate this amazing exhibition because they both have a long history with environmental illustration and have been extremely active with National Geographic.. Not to mention they both are very passionate about the outdoors wildlife, too! They are exceptionally friendly and fun to work with as well! Greg and Jack have always been a pleasure to work with and continue to do so throughout the organization of the show.

EARTH is divided into five categories: air, earth, water, energy and wildlife. The exhibit consists of multi-media works including original art in both traditional and digital medium, video, 3D, and comics. The goal of this exhibition is to educate and create awareness about current and future concerns with the state of the environment and our world. This show consists of 120 artists. It is a melting pot of the world’s most talented illustrators, including some fantastic newcomers. This exhibition gives the artists a forum to set forth their personal views about the state of the world and the environment.

In conjunction with the exhibit, the Society along with Materials for the Arts will host two free workshops. The first workshop will take place at the MFTA warehouse and will be directed towards NYC public school science teachers. A second workshop, The Art of Flora and Fauna, will take place at the Museum with at-risk youth from the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation After School Program.

The Society’s mission of promoting the art and appreciation of illustration through exhibits, lectures and education will be supported through this high profile exhibit. The Society hopes that through this exhibit the field of illustration will help contribute to social and ecological consciousness. The goal of illustration is to elicit an emotional response from the viewer that will change the way they see the world and hopefully inspire some to become more active in effecting change for a better world. This project will reach out to a varied community of students, educators, artists and the public at large. With such powerful and inspiring art, the Society hopes to build awareness, bring people to action and help make a difference.

Hello EARTH!

My name is Kate.  I will be updating this blog along with my coworker and friend Tara. We are both passionate illustrators and environmental enthusiasts, and have been working with Greg Manchess and Jack Unruh (the curators) on this exciting project.

About two years ago Tara and I were looking over the Society of Illustrator’s book Art For Survival. The book was produced twenty years ago and featured the illustrations from 120 artists.  We found, much to our chagrin, that many of the images in that book are still relevant today.  It was at this moment that we decided to organize an exhibit to mark the twenty year anniversary, with a goal to educate and inform the public that the need to be environmentally aware and active is still very important.

Today we are very excited as the exhibition date approaches.  We have been working very hard, along with the entire staff of the Society of Illustrators, to put together the best show for you.  In the past few months we have secured an impressive list of illustrators, organized several related lectures and workshops, put together a press release, applied for numerous grants (thank you Jess!), researched sponsorship opportunities, and so much more.

I hope you enjoy this blog as we get closer to the exhibition date.  Not only are we going to give you advice and information on living an environmentally friendly lifestyle, but we will also be sharing our process work on our illustrations, along with several other featured artists’ work.

Thanks for reading!
